Visiting Mara Lake in British Columbia for your First Time

As a family, I have fond memories of going to Mara Lake when I was young. The drive from Calgary usually consisted of me asking my father – “Are we there yet?”.

If you did not know, Mara lake along with the small village of Mara is located in the beautiful Shuswap region of British Columbia, Canada. The area is mostly covered in thick forests and enjoys a fairly mild climate by Canadian standards.

The Shuswap is a picturesque holiday destination, much like its neighbour, the world-famous Okanagan Valley. But unlike the busy Okanagan, the Shuswap is much less congested in the summer and is abundant in quiet places to free your mind and escape the everyday rat race. That being said Mara Lake does sometimes get busy, particularly on the long weekends when visitors from neighbouring areas flock to enjoy the sunshine and water activities on offer.

Mara Lake itself is a beautiful deep blue colour and is surrounded by lush forest. It’s a popular spot for swimming, boating, and fishing in the summer months. And in the winter, it’s a great place to come for some cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

If you’re looking for a peaceful place to get away from it all, then Mara Lake is definitely worth a visit. This year was my first time back since we all went there as a family for many years as I mentioned when I was younger.
